THE WAPISHIANA HAMMOCK
"THE BEST HAMMOCK I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE"
The Wapishiana Hammock is made in the Rupununi Savannahs hinterland of Guyana in the original land of the Wapishiana people.
These unique hammocks which are pre-Colombian in design and traditional to the Wapishiana and are made from a soft natural cotton cultivated in rainforest hills especially for the hammock. All hammocks are hand woven on frame-looms exactly as they were centuries ago.
In the last century, Anthropologists Walter Roth and Richard Shomburgh, writing about their exploration of the Guianas, were great admirers of the hammock. Roth portrays the beauty and artistry of the Wapishiana Hammock in detailed drawings in his book, Amerindian Art and Craft.
The hammocks: modest, practical, elegant and tasteful as they appear to a quick glance, must be among the few wonders of the textile world today, ranking alongside our highest technological developments. It's design, as well as its manufacture, has evolved through centuries of use. Ann Sutton, M.B.E. |
